Manufacturing

Lunenburg Queens has a substantial manufacturing base.  The region has twice as many people working in the manufacturing sector as does the province as a whole (per 1,000 in the workforce).  However, a shift-share analysis of the manufacturing sector from 2001 to 2006 shows a strong shifting away from this sector over that timeframe (see Appendix B for details).  In addition, the wood products manufacturing sector has struggled in recent years.

Despite this, the outlook for manufacturing in Lunenburg Queens remains quite robust.  The provincial government is making a strong push for international and national manufacturing companies to locate in Nova Scotia and Lunenburg Queens is well positioned as a manufacturing centre with a lower cost environment but still with close access to the infrastructure of Halifax (airport, port, R&D, etc.).  In addition, the region has a number of flagship multinational manufacturers to bolster the case (Michelin, EADS/Composites Atlantic and High Liner Foods).
