Recruiting Employees

Share  |

Recruiting the right employees for your business can be a challenge.  While there are lots of people looking for work at any given time, not all of these “job seekers” are a good fit for the positions you have available.  You need people who can get the job done, have strong work ethics and fit in well with your established team of people.

Just like marketing your business, it is important to keep in mind “who” you are trying to reach when posting job ads as well as the budget you have to work with. If you’re looking for people who would use computers as part of their everyday work, then they would naturally use a computer to job search as well.  If, however, you are seeking employees who would not necessarily utilize this technology, use a recruitment technique that speaks directly to them. Some methods are free and some have a fee.

Workforce_Icon-smallCareer Resource Centres offer a variety of services to job seekers in your community including computer access, faxing and photocopy services, a resource library and resume assistance.  The most valuable tool at a CRC is their Job Directory / Job Board which posts job ads from newspapers and internet, as well as direct from employers.  There is no cost to post your job with a CRC and it is easy to do!  There are four Career Resource Centres in the Lunenburg Queens region, why not post with all of them or other centers in the province.

Workforce_Icon-smallEmployment Programs are often hosted in the Lunenburg Queens region to assist people find employment or make career choices. While each program is unique to the organization, demographic and funder, most have a common goal of trying to match participants with suitable employers.  This is a great way to find a person who has received some recent training in areas such as First Aid, WHMIS, computer and customer service.  Employer incentives may even be offered (wage subsidies, reimbursements, program support, etc.)

Workforce_Icon-smallWebsites - Many Job Seekers use on-line resources to look opportunities.  While there are lots of suggestions on which sites to use, keep in mind of the type of positions you are trying to fill, the frequency of which you are looking and who you are trying to attract.  Some sites are free and allow you to reach your local labour market.  Other sites may cost money, but reach the skilled employees you are looking for.  The important thing is to target your recruitment.  Know the skills you’re looking for and be specific in your posting.

Workforce_Icon-smallNewcomers - The Lunenburg Queens Regional Development Agency offers support to both Migrants and Immigrants who are settling in Nova Scotia.  The Immigration Officer has successfully connected many local employers with skilled Newcomers and works diligently to make the connection as smooth as possible.

Workforce_Icon-smallLocal Newspapers - Many job seekers (and even non-job seekers) will look at the Employment Section of the newspaper to see “who’s hiring”.  There are local options, as well as provincial and national options to consider.  If you do choose to advertise with a newspaper, consider having their team of professionals design your ad for you, to ensure that you are getting the best information out to your potential audience.

Workforce_Icon-smallPost-Secondary Career Services - The Nova Scotia Community College and most Universities offer Career Services to their students.  Future or recent graduates use this service to find employment in their field and are often "head-hunted” by companies from other provinces. You can get jobs posted on internal job boards or have your information directly relayed to faculty and students.

Workforce_Icon-smallHigh Schools - For future workforce planning, why not work directly with your local high school?  Get information to the Guidance Counsellors, Principals or teachers involved in O2, Step or other Community Based Learning programs.  If students are aware of the opportunities that will be available in their community, they can prepare accordingly for post-secondary options.
